In Australia every year thousands of children and adults require medical care for poisoning from pharmaceutical medications, illicit drugs or chemicals such as households products. The two main groups affected by poisoning children under five and young adults. More severe poisonings requiring hospitalisation involve intentional ingestions. Intentional ingestion requires assessment, in hospital, of both he effects of the product ingested and a mental health assessment.

Learning outcomes
  • On completion of this activity, the participant will be able to list the products most commonly responsible for accidental overdose in children under five.
  • On completion of this activity, the participant will be able to identify the ingested products that require hospital referral and further management.
  • On completion of this activity, the participant will be able to incorporate information from the Poisons Information Centres in their regular clinical practice
