136381 - How to Treat quiz: Oesophageal carcinoma

  • : Online
Relevance to General Practice

Barrett’s oesophagus develops as a consequence of persistent gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and predisposes to the development of dysplasia and adenocarcinoma of the oesophagus.
In Western society, most oesophageal carcinomas are squamous or adenocarcinomas. Risks in the West would seem to be obesity, smoking and alcohol with a background of reflux disease leading to adenocarcinoma in the majority. Rates of squamous cell carcinoma have been steadily decreasing commensurate with reduction in risk factors in the West.
