136821 - OPtimizing Treatment and Management of Obesity (OPTiMO)

  • : Online

This program will review key aspects of obesity management. It will review many of the commonly stated barriers to addressing obesity in primary care and provide strategies that clinicians can use to better manage their patients with obesity. There is also a tool which is an online resource that walks physicians through a series of questions that they can use to initiate and navigate a conversation about obesity and weight management with their patients. The physician enters info about the patient as they answer the questions and based on the input of responses the tool helps present different strategies and options for patient management

Relevance to General Practice

The prevalence of overweight and obesity among Australians has been steadily increasing for the past 30 years. Clinicians are encouraged to manage obesity as they would any other chronic disease state such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and respiratory conditions. This would normally involve an assessment of the disease and collaborating with the person with obesity on the different treatment options to reach these health-focused goals.
