How to Treat quiz: Special issues in women athletes

Relevance to General Practice

Relative energy deficiency in sport (RED-S) refers to the physiological consequences of energy deficiency arising from the mismatch of energy intake (nutrition) and energy expenditure (exercise). Physiological impairments impact menstrual function, bone health, metabolic rate, immunity, mood and recovery capacity.
Pregnancy naturally presents concerns for exercising women. Given the ethical difficulties of studying populations of pregnant women, past advice on exercise has been overly conservative. Most forms of exercise do not appear to pose an increased risk to the mother or the developing fetus in an uncomplicated pregnancy.
