Systemic lupus erythematosus is a multisystem automimmune disease with protean clinical and laboratory manifestations and a variable severity from mild to life-threatening. There are no specific diagnostic criteria, and the differential diagnosis is wide. GPs need to be alert to the possibility of SLE in their patients, to investigate appropriately and to monitor for complications of the disease and its treatment in their patients with SLE.
