How to Treat quiz: Age-related macular degenerationRelevance to General Practice
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of irreversible vision loss, affecting around 1 in 7 people over 50 in Australia. It is a multifactorial eye disease, with the degeneration focused on the central region of the retina (the macula).
Advanced AMD leads to the loss of central vision, and significant difficulties with reading, recognising faces and watching television. AMD is associated with depression and loss in quality of life, and has significant socioeconomic impacts.
