How to Treat quiz: Iron overload syndrome

Relevance to General Practice

Iron overload is a diverse disorder characterised by excess iron, which saturates normal storage mechanisms leading to deposition in tissues and end-organ damage. The liver and heart are particularly affected. Hereditary haemochromatosis is the most common cause of iron overload encountered in general practice. Other causes include iron loading anaemias or acquired haematological disorders, such as myelodysplastic syndrome. Treatment of iron overload syndrome depends on the underlying disorder and may involve either regular venesection or iron chelation therapy.
