Venous thromboembolism is most commonly provoked by an acquired transient risk factor. 
Testing for thrombophilia should not be routinely performed in unselected adults with Venous thromboembolism. Thrombophilia testing should not be performed while on anticoagulation or at the time of an acute thrombotic event.
