Cancer diagnoses and their complications are becoming more common in our ageing community. Cancer-associated venous thromboembolism is an important complication and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Awareness of risk factors for venous thrombosis, medication interactions and logistical issues in using injectable anticoagulants has traditionally been the first step in general practice. Exciting developments the use of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) in cancer have provided options for future practice modification.
