Relevance to General Practice

A hernia is defined as a protrusion of a viscus or structure through its normal containing covering. Hernias may be congenital or acquired.
Many patients may live with their hernias for years without an adverse outcome In patients with asymptomatic hernias, especially in the elderly, there is a tendency to conservative treatment. However, studies have shown patients do become symptomatic or develop complications thus surgery is currently recommended for most hernias.
