Relevance to General Practice

Provide attendees with skills to assess and treat hand injuries that may present to their practice. Specifically how to assess the hand, diagnose fractures and tendon injuries and when to refer to specialists.

Hand injuries are common presentations across GP clinics and initial management is essential to favorable outcomes. A recent study by Meals et al (2013) has emphasised early movement, stating that un-involved rays should be unencumbered in order to encourage early use, immobilisation should be minimised. Safe, early active motion will be discussed and when this is appropriate.

Attendee's will have the opportunity to practice their palpation skills, test their knowledge of anatomical landmarks and provocative tests in these sessions.

Learning outcomes

  • Undertake a comprehensive hand assessment, including provocative testing and palpation.
  • Differentiate the characteristics of a stable versus unstable fracture for the phalanxes, carpals and metacarpals
  • To diagnose closed hand trauma including mallet, central slip injuries, sagittal band injuries, zone I flexor tendon injuries, wrist ligament strains/ruptures
  • To utilise course material and specialist information to identify effective referral indicators to ensure efficient/effective patient care
