161080 - Mudgee Medico Masterclass | Parkinson's Disease

  • : Online

This presentation will start with a video heavy session on differential diagnoses for Parkinson’s Disease (PD). It will then cover treatment of motor symptoms across the stages of PD before giving practical management advice for common non-motor symptoms.

Relevance to General Practice

In the context of an ageing population, Australian GPs will be asked increasingly to manage challenging neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson’s disease (PD). Conservative estimates indicate there are just under 81,000 people living with Parkinson’s in Australia, making it the most common major movement disorder and second most common neurological degenerative condition after dementia. Previous Australian research evaluating Parkinson’s disease in general practice demonstrated a lack of knowledge, confidence and the potential role of education in rectifying these deficiencies. The diagnosis of PD is difficult and GPs need education to understand the range of potential differential diagnoses to streamline referral routes and ensure patients are initiated on the correct pathway at the earliest point. The choice of appropriate medications and ability to evaluate how dose increases should be made will likely reduce hospitalisations and transition to residential care.
