The Emergencies on the EDGE course focuses on essential skills in critical care and extended emergency medicine skills. The course will be delivered in a series of 20 modules and explores acute chest pain, headache, abdominal pain, shortness of breath, acute poisoning, first trimester bleeding, serious injury, orthopaedic injury, acute red eye, epistaxis, the sick child, mental health emergencies and managing pain.. Each module will have a particular focus on emergency presentations in a rural setting.

Relevance to General Practice

The Emergencies on the EDGE course is based on the need for familiarity in a structured approach to assessment and management of an array of complex emergency medical presentations in a rural environment. Regular updates are essential for maintaining the important clinical skill sets and critical thinking to provide the highest standard of critical care at the earliest possible opportunity. 

The online course focuses on emergency topics that present in rural GP settings. The content of each module builds on existing knowledge and clinical skill, refreshes less commonly used skills, and allows a platform to further develop performance in emergency and critical care

Learning outcomes
  • List the steps in clinical assessment of the child presenting with acute illness
  • List and explain the differential diagnosis for abnormal ST segment elevation or depression and recommend appropriate action
  • Identify the features of a mixed acid base disorder
  • Describe the standard procedures used for examination of the eye in acute clinical practice
  • Identify fractures associated with a high risk for complication and requiring urgent referral to orthopaedic services
