166105 - Heart to Heart - Managing the Milestones of the modern Cardiac Patient

  • : Online

To educate GPs in the optimisation of pre and post cardiac surgery patients (open and new robotic cardiac bypass) and to better understand the gender differences in heart disease.

Relevance to General Practice

According to the National Heart Foundation, more than 25% of all cardiac surgery patients will develop depression, and according to new research, women are at twice the risk of developing depression in the aftermath of acute myocardial infarction. More than 40% of cardiac surgery patients are anaemic, which is a common and serious problem which makes these topics highly significant for primary care physicians. It is critical therefore, that General Practitioners possess enough knowledge of referral pathways to best manage patients with heart disease given that first presentation is almost always to primary care. (see attached expanded version)

Learning outcomes
  • GP's will have the ability to identify the gender differences in diagnosing Cardiovascular Disease
  • GP's will have the ability to manage both pre and post cardiac surgery patient needs (including iron, weight and diabetes)
  • GP's will have the ability to identify patients suitable for Robotic vs Open Bypass Surgery
  • GP's will be able to identify effective referral pathways and options to ensure continuity of patient care
