building improved pathways to care and integrated service delivery amongst GPs, Paediatrics, mental heath and disability services for people with co-morbid mental health and intellectual disability.Relevance to General Practice
The prevalence of mental ill health is at least two to three times higher in people with intellectual disability (ID) compared to the the general population. Many people people with ID experience a high level of complexity and an atypical profile and presentation of mental illness thus requiring a high level of expertise and coordinated approaches between health providers and services.
Australian GPs have reported a lack of skills and training in the area of ID mental health and audits of Australian education curricula indicate that enhancements in this area are needed.
