169994 - Contemporary Sinus Treatments

  • : Online

GPs attending this session will explore diagnosis of chronic sinusitis and treatment options, including medical and surgical options, as well as identifying complex cases of sinusitis requiring treatment.

Relevance to General Practice

Sinusitis (inflammation of the nasal sinuses) is one of the most common primary care presentations in Australia, with up to 1.4 in every 100 general practice encounters for acute or chronic sinusitis. It has been shown to have a greater impact on social functioning than chronic heart failure, angina or back pain.

Early diagnosis is important to provide appropriate treatment, which can reduce the need for medication and improve quality of life. Diagnostic procedures may include medical history, physical exam an testing. Treatments include supportive care approaches, or if symptoms persist antibiotics may be prescribed. In complex cases, surgical treatment may be required.

Complications of acute sinusitis are not common (estimated one in in 12,000 episodes in children and one in 32,000 episodes in adults), however immediate referral to an ENT specialist should occur if complications are suspected, as they can cause significant morbidity and mortality if left untreated.
