To provide education for general practitioners on disorders of the male reproductive system

Relevance to General Practice

This unit considers disorders of the male reproductive system, including erectile dysfunction, which has prevalence of up to 75%, particularly after treatment for prostate cancer, epididymo-orchitis and undescended testes. Erectile dysfunction can be associated with chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, and can also be considered a warning sign of chronic disease. Acute testicular pain is a common presentation in children and adolescents, but can affect males of any age. The most common causes are testicular torsion and epididymo-orchitis, which account for about 85% of cases. Testicular torsion is a medical emergency and requires accurate diagnosis and prompt treatment. About 2–4% of newborn boys have undescended testes If untreated, this can cause health problems later in life. GPs play an important part in the identification and management of these disorders. However, studies have identified a need for further education and training in this area for GPs.
