182696 - GPTT Aboriginal Health Cultural Awareness Training

The aim of the GPTT Aboriginal Health Cultural Awareness Training program is to provide general practitioners with increased aboriginal cultural awareness. The learning activity takes 7-8 hours and is delivered as a continuous blended model throughout the GP training program. It includes three mandatory components aimed at broadening GP's knowledge and competence to deliver culturally appropriate care. Each component is tracked and/or evaluated.
Components include: 1. undertake an Aboriginal cultural activity (GPs choosing) to allow reflection on social, cultural and historical issues that affect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities. 2. Participate in an interactive online Aboriginal Health Module that covers population health statistics; initiatives for improving health care of Aboriginal people incorporating cultural awareness requirements for RACGP PIP Closing the Gap.
3. Participate in an interactive Aboriginal Health Service Workshop visit.

Relevance to General Practice

A non-judgmental and respectful approach to health care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples is important to Closing the Gap. This includes a knowledge of historical, cultural, social and contextual medical health system factors that have an impact on health care delivery for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.
The GPTT Aboriginal Health Cultural Awareness program provide information and on appropriate and culturally safe communication process and includes information and opportunity for reflection on local Aboriginal culture, health and community as well as providing a national overview on key initiatives for improving health care of Aboriginal people. This program is provided in a blended continuous manner with greater flexibility to suit learner needs.

  • Utilise self-reflection in your practice to provide culturally safe health services
  • Describe the work of an Aboriginal Health Service, and how GPs can work with an Aboriginal Health Service.
  • Implement the current and appropriate national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health initiatives.
  • List three health outcomes which are significantly different in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander populations to that of the general population
