182811 - check, unit 565, Central nervous system, October 2019

Speciality Classification
General Practice ( GP ) / Family Medicine
3 hrs

This edition of check considers the role of GPs in diagnosing and managing central nervous system conditions in general practice.

Relevance to General Practice

It was estimated that 43% of Australians were affected by a neurological disorder at some point throughout 2017.(1)
Multiple sclerosis (MS) has been reported to be ‘the most common chronic disabling disease of the central nervous system in young adults’.(2) At the end of 2017 there were approximately 25,607 Australians living with MS.(3)
Two per 100,000 patients are affected by idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) per year. IIH is more common among people who are obese; therefore, it is estimated that the incidence will increase as the rate of obesity increases.(4)
Following the 2003 introduction of the meningococcal C vaccine onto the National Immunisation Program, there was a decrease in the number of annual meningitis cases until 2013. However, the incidence of 1.5 in 100,000 recorded in 2017 was the highest since 2007.(5)
There were 1787 brain tumours diagnosed in Australia in 2015, and 1439 deaths caused by brain cancer in 2016.(6)
