183289 - GP Advanced Mental Health Skills Masterclass

  • : Online

The aim of the activity is to enhance the GP's ability to diagnose, treat and manage psychiatric disorders at an advanced level including being confident with managing complex cases. This one-day workshop is intended for GP's who have already completed the GP mental health skills masterclass (Primary pathway) and want to learn more about the specific management of complex psychiatric cases and co-morbidities.

Relevance to General Practice

Over the past decade, there has been increasing recognition of the role of primary care practitioners in reducing the burden of common mental disorders in Australian community. Around one-third of people presenting to general practitioners suffer a diagnosable mental disorder. A further one-third suffer significant psychological symptoms that do not meet the criteria for any specific disorder. A comparison of research interview results with GPs' detection of mental disorders reveals that 30-70% of GPs' patients go undetected (Walters et al). GP’s feel comfortable treating most mental disorders but experience difficulty treating personality disorders, mental health issues associated with substance abuse and other serious disorders. A study of patients with mental health disorders in general practice by Lloyd noted that 54% of patients still had specific problems after 11 years and that 37% had other illnesses likely associated with chronic mental disorders (Llyod et al)
