This online education activity involves the close reading of articles and reflection on their content to answer questions designed to help the participant engage with key medico-legal learnings. The topics covered are aimed at helping doctors to meet their professional obligations and include medical records (storage and privacy considerations), giving evidence in court, and providing effective feedback to colleagues. It should take around 2 hours to complete the entire activity; which can be completed over multiple sittings.

Relevance to General Practice

The mandatory data breach obligations which came into effect in February 2018 introduced new obligations and challenges. All medical practices should have a working understanding of their legislative obligations and the sorts of data breaches that are likely to ensure that they have a data breach response plan in place. In the 16–17 financial year, advice after receiving a subpoena or a request to appear in court was one of the top five reasons members called MDA National for medico-legal support. Some of the most commonly requested future education resources from MDA National members are for topics relating to managing staff, working in teams, and dealing with difficult colleagues. In the 16–17 financial year, two of the top ten reasons for calling MDA National for medico-legal advice related to practice management and employment issues. Being able to successfully function within a medical healthcare team requires a non-technical skill set not generally covered in medical training.
