190743 - Early childhood oral health: case studies from general practice

  • : Online

Good oral health is essential for good general health and wellbeing. Health professionals, such as those in general practice, who have early contact with young families have a critical role in improving oral health outcomes. This activity aims to enhance clinicians’ knowledge of the identification, prevention and management of early childhood caries (ECC) and provide ideas to support suitable engagement of caregivers in optimising childhood oral health. The activity may be useful for any professional involved in primary care. The activity is based on questions and answers related to general practice case studies. The Early childhood oral health activity was developed in conjunction with the Centre for Oral Health Strategy, NSW.

Relevance to General Practice

Almost half (47%) of all Australian children aged 6 years have had a history of baby teeth dental caries. Early childhood caries progresses quickly and primary prevention of ECC needs to start early with prenatal education given to expectant parents. Prevention information needs to continue whenever clinicians have contact with caregivers and children-this is particularly important for disadvantaged populations who have a higher risk of ECC. Health professionals, such as those in general practice, who have early contact with young families have a critical role in improving oral health outcomes. The Public Health Association of Australia says: ‘Given the common risk factors to oral health and general health, oral health promotion should be integrated into general health promotion, planning, program implementation and evaluation.’
