193512 - Masterclass in Youth Mental Health

  • : Online

The workshop aims to increase health professionals’ skill and confidence in:
1. Assessing young people with complex mental health needs
2. Navigating referral pathways
3. Supporting young people as part of a multi-disciplinary team
This event will provide GPs and other primary care providers with the skills to assess young people for complex needs in general practice.

Relevance to General Practice

While young people have the greatest need for mental health interventions, they are least likely to seek help. Synthetic estimates of 12 month-prevalence of mental disorders among 4-17 year olds show that there are 23,100 children suffering from mental ill health within the CESPHN region. A recent survey by Mission Australia shows that rates of psychological distress in young people have risen 5.5 per cent in the past seven years. Lack of training and lack of referral places are reasons that GPs give for not screening for youth issues including mental health. As a result, understanding referral pathways can lead to better identification and ensuing treatment for young people. However, child and adolescent health and mental health are both topics on which GPs desire more education.
