To empower the clinician to assess a person with a phobia and to then treat them or refer them for treatment with Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Focussed Psychological Strategies (FPS), and to then review their progress.

Relevance to General Practice

This One Day Mental Health Module teaches doctors how to assess a person with a mental health disorder and to develop a Mental Health Treatment Plan, using the example of a phobia. The core principles of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and the Focussed Psychological Strategies (FPS) are referred to for treatment. 
Approved by the RACGP for 6 ALMs. 
Approved by the GPMHSC for FPS-CPD for doctors already registered for FPS. GPMHSC approval for MH-ST (level 1) Medicare item number eligibility (2715, 2717) also sought. 
The principles from this module can be applied for other psychological-medical, mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression. 
This module is avialable in Sydney New South Wales, Brisbane Queensland, Darwin Northern Teritory and Melbourne Victoria in the 2014-2015 triennium.

Learning outcomes
  • Practice constructing a graded hierarchy for a person with a phobia.
  • Understand how to formulate a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP).
  • Adopt a policy to review patients/consumers with Mental Health Treatment Plans and to flag those patient's records for review.
  • Demonstrate knowledge about how to conduct follow up with a person who becomes distressed during a consultation.
