Relevance to General Practice

The practice of ultrasound guided vascular access has changed substantially over the past decade and increasingly become a necessary and relevant skill for GPs and GP Anaesthetists. 

Multiple national and international annual congresses, large numbers of dedicated courses in various parts of the world and an increasing number of publications on the topic testify to the enormous increase in interest in ultrasound in regional anaesthesia.

  • Modify ultrasound system controls to attain basic practical proficiency in image optimisation
  • Describe the sonographic characteristics of peripheral vessels in various physiological states
  • Describe and identify the differences in sonographic appearance of muscles, nerves, tendons, arteries and veins
  • Demonstrate basic practical proficiency in vascular access through experience gained in the use of ultrasound phantoms
