84170 - Manage exacerbations of COPD

  • : Online

Relevance to General Practice

COPD is a common chronic condition and GPs manage patients with COPD on a regular basis. 1 in 7 people aged over 40 years have COPD and half of the people experiencing symptoms currently don't have a diagnosis. Those that are diagnosed can be supported in their management of COPD including exacerbations. Exacerbations are a serious event in the course of the disease and result in lung function decline. This module provides information regarding the early identification and management of exacerbations of COPD.

Learning outcomes
  • identify the importance of early identification and management of exacerbations of COPD
  • educate patients on how to monitor their symptoms and develop individualised symptom management action plans with COPD patients and their carers
  • recognise how to implement appropriate management for COPD patients with frequent exacerbations
  • describe the value of using controlled oxygen and ventilation during an exacerbation and outline when a patient requires hospitalisation
  • recognise the role of general practice in review and follow-up.
