94176 - Inhaler device technique eLearning

  • : Online
Relevance to General Practice

COPD is a common chronic condition in Australia with a peak prevalence expect to occur by 2020. GPs are increasingly involved in the diagnosis and ongoing management of COPD. It is recognised as one of the leading cause of potentially preventable hospital admissions. 1 in 7 people aged over 40 years have COPD and half of the people experiencing symptoms currently don't have a diagnosis. This online training provides an overview of inhaler device technique. Evidence shows that up to 90% of patients don't use their inhaler devices correctly. One study demonstrated that 89% of trained health care professionals were unable to describe or demonstrate correct technique for a pressurised metered dose inhaler (puffer). Since 2014, 4 new inhaler devices have been released onto the market in Australia for patients with COPD. It is important that prescribers of medicines and other health professionals can support patients with COPD to choose an appropriate device and instruct on correct use.
