A two day intensive program in Advanced Life Support accredited with the ARC is now available in Tasmania. Consists of lectures, practical workshops and cardiac arrest scenarios, providing the opportunity to practice skills and apply knowledge. Competency in Basic Life Support is a pre-requisite.

Relevance to General Practice

Advanced Life Support courses provide candidates with the necessary skills to lead a team in the event of Cardiac Arrest. GP’s annually see an average of 11.6 serious medical emergencies that potentially require resuscitation. 
Whilst all staff working at a surgery must be skilled in basic life support. The GP needs an understanding of advanced life support principles. GP’s play a crucial role in managing medical emergencies in the community. In fact, General Practitioners, along with ambulance officers, are the most likely health professionals to be called to respond to medical emergencies in the community

Learning outcomes
  • Identify patients at risk of cardiorespiratory arrest.
  • Identify and treat acute coronary syndromes.
  • Practice and demonstrate the correct techniques for airway management in a simulated environment.
  • Identify the indications for defibrillation and demonstrate safe defibrillation in a simulated environment.
  • Review use of various emergency drugs appropriate to a clinical setting and determine whether to current practice supplies require updating
