How to treat quiz: The malignant breast mass

Relevance to General Practice

Breast is the second most common cancer in Australian women, accounting for more than 25% of all cancers diagnosed in this group. The discovery of a breast lump for any woman is a very distressing time and her GP will often be the first port of call The task for the GP is to determine if there is a true mass, ascertain the patient’s risk factors for breast cancer, organise appropriate imaging and tissue sampling, as well as discussing a basic treatment plan when the diagnosis is made.

Learning outcomes
  • On completion of this activity, the participant will be able to utilise the triple assessment protocol to ensure patient safety when investigating a breast mass
  • On completion of this activity, the participant will be able to identify women at higher risk of developing breast cancer.
  • On completion of this activity, the participant will be able to discuss the management of breast cancer.
