Reflux management in pharmacy explained

Why is this important?

Reflux is common, with 15 to 20% of Australians experiencing symptoms at least once per week. Patients describe symptoms in a way that may not match medical terminology. Reflux symptoms are associated with formation of the acid pocket as well as presence of pepsin and bile in the refluxate. Apart from providing advice on lifestyle and diet modifications, management needs to address both the acid pocket and the presence of additional aggressors. lginate-based therapy works by forming a ‘raft’ that floats on top of the stomach contents, displacing the acid pocket away from the oesophagus as well as protecting it from refluxate containing pepsin and bile.

What is your role as a pharmacist?

It is important for pharmacist to be able to manage reflux with non-prescription medicines.

What’s in it for you?

Pharmacists should be able to recognise symptoms and causes of reflux to provide advice and management options as appropriate.
