Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) and the community pharmacist explained

Why is this important?

The recent paradigm shift in the management of CLL from chemoimmunotherapy to oral targeted therapy has resulted in a greater need for pharmacist-patient engagement. It has now become essential for pharmacists to have practice knowledge of oral cancer therapies that may be dispensed in the community setting to ensure best patient outcome.

What is your role as a pharmacist?

Pharmacists, as medicines experts, will need to be able to ensure best patient care when managing people with CLL. Community pharmacists may be required to:

  • dispense oral targeted therapy for the management of CLL,
  • recognise adverse effects and interactions
  • ensure best patient outcome and avoid patient harm.

It is therefore important for pharmacists to understand disease state, management options and the role of the pharmacist as part of the multidisciplinary team.

What’s in it for you?

Pharmacists will gain a working knowledge of the diagnosis and management of CLL, in addition to the adverse effects and potential interactions of oral therapy for CLL. Pharmacists will be better able to support people with CLL, especially during initiation of therapy and enabling adherence.

Learning Objectives

After completing this module, pharmacists will be able to:

  • Define chronic lymphocytic leukaemia
  • Discuss the diagnosis of chronic lymphocytic leukaemia
  • Discuss treatments for chronic lymphocytic leukaemia
  • Identify the major adverse effects associated with some treatment   options
  • Discuss the role of the pharmacist in supporting people with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia with a focus on initiating and adhering to therapy.
