Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe factors contributing to the reduction in obstetric services in rural areas.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the advantages and disadvantages with maintaining smaller rural maternity units.
  • Identify differences in maternal health between rural and urban women.
  • Develop an understanding of the relative safety of rural maternity services, as well as the increased rate of complications.
  • Outline the factors that influence a woman’s choice of maternity services.
  • Understand the role of general practice in promoting and supporting breast-feeding.
  • Demonstrate recognition of the difficulties for women to adopt lifestyle modifications in the antenatal period.
  • Describe the interventions available to clinicians in reducing alcohol related harm in pregnancy.
