Cow’s milk protein allergy in infants: Diagnosis and management in general practice

  • : South Wharf VIC 3006

Cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA) is the leading cause of food allergy in children under 3, and renders affected infants unable to consume most commercially available baby formulas. This education covers the diagnosis of CMPA in infants, and outlines the available management methods.

On completion of this education activity participants will be able to:

  • Understand the benefits of breastfeeding
  • Describe the clinical features of Cow’s Milk Protein Allergy (CMPA) in infants and state the diagnostic criteria for CMPA.
  • Recognise the importance of a full diagnostic work-up for CMPA, including cow’s milk protein elimination and challenge.
  • Summarise the treatment and management options for CMPA, in particular, recognise which treatments are inappropriate for CMPA.
  • Describe the features and state the evidence-based recommendations for each of the therapeutic milk formula options for the treatment of CMPA and identify situations necessitating specialist referral of infants with CMPA.

This activity was developed with an educational grant from Bayer.
