The Ethical Considerations course is part of the Breastfeeding for Health Professionals program. Upon completion the participant should be able to: engage in consideration of ethical issues using an ethical decision-making framework within the guidelines of national and international codes of ethics for midwives relate professional responsibility to the International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) Code of Ethics apply International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA) Standards of Practice to clinical situations apply the WHO and MAIF Codes to potential situations encountered in clinical practice, and define responsibility regarding ethical issues such as conflict of interest, professional and client autonomy and advocacy, accountability, confidentiality, evidence-based practice and consent and decision-making.

 

Target Audience

Any clinical or non-clinical employee of a health institution who is required to have an understanding of breastfeeding practice. This can include non-clinical staff (such as cleaners, cooks etc) through to nurses, midwives, doctors and lactation consultants.

 

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course the participant should be able to: 

  • engage in consideration of ethical issues using an ethical decision-making framework within the guidelines of national and international codes of ethics for midwives 
  • relate professional responsibility to the International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) Code of Ethics
