Who would benefit from this course

Registered nurses/midwives who are working, or wish to work in General Practice, Family Planning, Sexual Health, HIV/ AIDS, Women's Health, Drug and Alcohol, Gynaecology, Midwifery, Youth and Corrective Services.

This course is designed to prepare nurses/midwives to function in an extended clinical role as a practitioner in the specialty of reproductive and sexual health.

Scholarships covering tuition fees are available for this course.  Applying for a scholarship does not secure a place in the course. Registering and paying in full will secure course entry for eligible applicants. Successful scholarship recipients will be refunded their course fees.

Course description

Reproductive and Sexual Health Clinical Accreditation Program (RSH-CAP) is a clinical competency-based nursing program. Topics covered include cervical screening, breast health, STIs, pregnancy options and men's health.

Completion of RSH-CAP will give recognition of prior learning for the Specialty Clinical Practice (6cp) subject of the Graduate Certificate in Advanced Nursing Practice at UTS.

Participants are enabled to integrate theory into practice through simulation, observation and clinical practice.

Entry requirements / eligibility

Registered Nurses, Registered Midwives and Enrolled Nurses are able to enrol in this course with the understanding that only Registered Nurses & Midwives will have the potential to gain Recognition of Prior Learning for Clinical Speciality Practice in UTS's relevant post-graduate courses.

Registered Nurses & Midwives will need to:

  • Hold current registration as a Registered Nurse with AHPRA
  • Hold 12 months post-registration experience

Enrolled Nurses will need to:

  • Hold current registration as an Enrolled Nurse with AHPRA
  • Be employed in the general practice, sexual, reproductive or women's health environment
  • Have completed a probationary period within their general practice, sexual, reproductive or women's health employment, where relevant.

Note: Registration should be without conditions.

Learning outcomes

At the completion of the program participants will meet and demonstrate the following objectives:

  • Recognise and evaluate factors that influence an individual’s reproductive and sexual health choices
  • Competently deliver reproductive and sexual health care
  • Reflect on own practice and update according to evidence based practice standards
  • Course structure

    The RSH-CAP structure is designed to demonstrate the participant's ability to undertake self-directed learning and reflective practice in the clinical setting. The program requires the participant to complete a series of activities and assessments.

    Pre-course activities A short online pre-course activity opens 1 week prior to workshop
    Face to face workshop Attendance at a two day workshop
    Clinical training Up to 32 hours of supervised clinical training at a Family Planning NSW clinic to be completed within 16 - 18 weeks from the workshop date
    Assessable tasks Online discussion submissions
    Completion of clinical competencies
    Online exam
    Submission of workbooks
    One external observation clinical session  

    Following completion of the 21 week program and receiving satisfactory outcomes in all assessable components, participants will have met the requirements for the RSH-CAP. Registered Nurses will be eligible to apply for advanced standing in the postgraduate subject 'Speciality Clinical Practice' offered by the Faculty of Health at The University of Technology, Sydney (UTS). UTS will give recognition of prior learning for the subject 'Speciality Clinical Practice' for up to two years following completion of the RSH-CAP.

     

    Cervical Screening Upskilling

    This workshop will be offered in conjunction with Family Planning NSW Reproductive & Sexual Health Clinical Accreditation Program.

    This practical workshop is designed for health professionals wishing to improve their knowledge, improve their skills and gain clinical experience in cervical screening.

    The course is funded by the Cancer Institute NSW. There are no course fees for health professionals working in NSW. Information will be sent to applicants prior to the RSH CAP workshop.

    Recognition/Accreditation

    A statement of attainment will be issued by Family Planning NSW to all satisfactory participants for the RSH-CAP after completion of the program.
