General practice strategies for the management of insomnia
- : Perth WA 6000
Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder seen in primary care, accounting for 8 out of 10 sleep disorders. Australian population surveys show that up to one third of adults have regular difficulty in getting to sleep or staying asleep. Despite its frequent presentation, the management of insomnia is said to be suboptimal due to under recognition of the disorder as well as inadequate treatment strategies.
This activity will help GPs understand the impact of insomnia, how to identify insomnia and how to approach treatment. This activity should take about one hour to complete.
Upon completion of this module the participant should be able to:
- Describe the diagnostic criteria for insomnia.
- Outline the importance for treating insomnia, including effect on quality of life.
- Identify the various treatment options for insomnia and apply a stepwise approach to management.
- Explain the use of prolonged-release melatonin for the treatment of insomnia.
This activity is sponsored by Aspen Australia.
