Pharmacists are repeatedly asked for pain relief for headache. With the availability of small quantities of some triptans in Australia from February 2021 for Pharmacist Only supply, patients with a bad headache are likely to state that they have a migraine. This article aims to review the presentation and management of headaches and provide treatment options for adults.

Learning Objectives

After completing this activity, pharmacists should be able to:

  • describe the difference between headaches including migraine;
  • list the main causes of headache;
  • identify medications which may cause headache;
  • discuss the pharmacological treatments for tension type headache and migraine;
  • discuss non-drug adjuncts where appropriate.
