The kitchen workshop provides students and clinicians with an overview of how to determine minor and major kitchen modification solutions to suit older people and people with a disability residing in their own homes. Information will be shared on principles to consider when creating kitchen recommendations and concept options. Clinical reasoning for a range of client scenarios will be discussed, and photos of barriers and solutions will be showcased. There will be information provided about the range of resources to draw upon when creating home modification options. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss their own kitchen modification scenarios during the workshop over the course of the day.    

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

Suitable for OT's only - Tailored to level of experience of attendees, from students to well experienced clinicians.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of the workshop attendees will have knowledge about:

  • Broad principles for creating kitchen recommendations, scopes of work and concept drawings of accessible and adaptable kitchens  with Universal Design features in domestic homes
  • Products and designs to suit kitchens for older people and people with disabilities
  • Resources to assist practice

Outcomes - Enhance measurement and drawing skills and enhance current knowledge about home modification practice in the specific areas listed.

Teaching Strategies – use of lecture format with theory illustrated by diagrams, and photos; practical group discussion and group activity.

Learning Activities – practical measuring of the built environment and drawing of toilet area as part of learning to draw to scale

PRESENTER

Elizabeth Ainsworth
B Occ Thy, Hons; M Occ Thy, Contemporary Clinical Practice

Elizabeth is a private practice Occupational Therapist and Access Consultant (qualified and accredited) who has been working in the housing field in Australia for over 25 years. She has a keen interest in Universal Design and has presented papers both nationally and internationally on the impact of this design approach on housing design and home modification practice. Elizabeth is a consultant to individuals and their families, and clients in the insurance, legal and construction industries; an expert witness for the Supreme Court in Queensland; and a Livable Housing Assessor and Specialist Disability Accommodation Assessor. 

WORKSHOP DETAILS

Participants will need:

  • Steel tape measures
  • Scale ruler with 1:20 scale (and not ordinary ruler)
  • Pencils, erasers and spare paper

Reccomended:

  • Copy of AS 1428.1 2009 if this can be accessed through their workplace or purchased
