IUD Insertion Training

Who would benefit from this course

Medical Practitioners and eligible Nurse Practitioners who wish to offer IUD insertion to women in their clinical practice.

Course description

This course in IUD insertion consists of two modules.

Module 1 - Theory is divided in to two components

Component 1:  Information is provided on IUD types, pre-insertion assessment of patients, insertion techniques and management of IUD related problems. Learning activities and videos are accessed online prior to attending a practical workshop.

Component 2: The practical workshop comprises small group discussions with case studies and IUD insertion skills training utilising pelvic models. The goal is to develop competence and skill in IUD insertion techniques on models prior to clinical placement. (Module 2)

Module 2 - Practical

Module 2 involves individual clinical sessions where course participants will be further familiarised with the common types of IUDs available in Australia, and will insert IUDs in patients under direct supervision of an experienced clinician. Training is competence-based, recognises the trainee's established skills and concentrates on areas that require further development.

Clinical training may be undertaken at a Family Planning NSW clinic, or interstate. Training may also be available through one of Family Planning NSW training partnerships with NSW Public Hospitals or Community Women's Health Centres.

Entry requirements / eligibility Medical practitioners

Applicants must have the following:

  • Be a qualified medical practitioner with at least two years postgraduate clinical experience
  • Hold current, unconditional general medical registration with the Medical Board of Australia
  • Hold adequate Professional Indemnity Insurance (this remains the sole responsibility of the participant).

It is preferred applicants have:

  • Considerable experience in women's health and gynaecology and have well-developed bimanual pelvic examination skills
  • Extensive experience in contraceptive counselling
  • Undertaken a Family Planning Certificate or equivalent Diploma
Registered Nurses

Applicants must have the following

  • Hold current, unconditional registration with AHPRA 
  • At least two years postgraduate nursing experience
  • Hold adequate Professional Indemnity Insurance, which can be either personally obtained or through place of employment (this remains the sole responsibility of the participant)
  • The support of their management team to ensure that they have continuing opportunities to maintain competence in their clinical practice.

It is preferred applicants have:

  •  Extensive experience in women's health, contraceptive counselling and have well-developed bimanual pelvic examination skills.
  • A Family Planning Certificate or equivalent Diploma

This course is conducted in two modules. Module 1 must be completed prior to Module 2 however recognition of prior learning (RPL) may be applied for.

Learning outcomes
  • This training programme aims to equip the learner with the evidence based knowledge, skills and attitudes required to effectively consult with and provide a woman with effective intrauterine contraception (IUC)

  • Explain (IUC) as a long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) method and the role of the levonorgestre  intrauterine device (IUD)   in the management of appropriately investigated heavy menstrual bleeding.

  • Describe the types of IUD available in Australia; their mode of action, advantages and disadvantages and contraindications

  • Assess patient suitability for IUD insertion; list relevant investigations and advise on appropriate location and timing for insertion.

  • Describe the steps involved in the outpatient IUD insertion and the technique required for the different devices available.

  • Outline the management of commonly encountered IUD related issues eg. bleeding problems, pelvic pain, missing strings

  • Demonstrate basic skills in IUD removal techniques

After completion of Module 2 - Supervised Clinical Attachment, participants will also be able to:

  • Utilise a systematic approach to intrauterine contraception- pre-insertion checklist, obtaining informed consent for IUD insertion, appropriate documentation of the procedure in patient records.

  • Demonstrate competence in insertion of IUDs in non-sedated women.

  • Demonstrate effective aseptic technique and infection control during the IUD insertion procedure.

  • Describe the management of medical emergencies and complications that may arise during and after IUD insertion e.g. vasovagal reaction, perforation.

Course structure
Pre-course online activities

Pre-reading and related activities (approximately four hours) must be completed before attendance at the face-to face-workshop.
Distributed to participants four weeks prior to attendance

Face to face workshop
(Module 1 - Theory)

Attendance at a three hour face-to-face pre-clinical workshop will conclude Module 1

Clinical Training
(Module 2)

Up to four clinical sessions (4 hours per clinic) 16 hours approximately
Participants have three months from conclusion of Module 1 to complete the clinical training



'Family Planning NSW Certificate of Competency in IUD Insertion' will be issued upon successful completion of Modules 1 and 2.  Assessment will be based upon full attendance, submission of home-based learning activities prior to workshop, and successful demonstration of competence in IUD insertion technique during final clinical session
