The Youth Friendly Doctor (YFD) program is designed to provide you with the skills and knowledge to remain up to date with the most pertinent issues affecting young people and how to best manage these issues.
Mental Health: Diagnosis and Assessment, will cover the following topics:
High prevalence presentations – anxiety, depression, eating disorders, conduct disorders
Low prevalence presentations – psychosis, developmental disorders, bipolar
Co-morbid presentations – drug and alcohol, emerging personality disorders
Screening in general practice
Assessment in general practice
Diagnosis and formulation
Legal issues – consent and the Mental Health Act
Engagement and interviewing

Understanding of high prevalence, low prevalence and co-morbid psychological disorders in young people.
Describe the common modes of presentation and current thinking about aetiology.
Improved interviewing skills with adolescents with mental health issues and their parents including risk assessment.
Improved knowledge of legal issues relating to psychosocial disorders including the application of the mental health act.
Improved knowledge of when to make an appropriate referral to child and adolescent mental health services.
