Mini Birth Masterclass Workshop

Australia is a geographically and culturally diverse country and this is reflected in the varied maternity care arrangements. Women have a right to safe maternity care as close to home as possible. Maternity care in the rural and remote setting in Australia depends upon GPs, particularly procedural GPs, working in close collaboration with local midwives and other health workers. This program focuses on developing skills in assisted vaginal birth for GPO's who work in rural centres with limited access to backup from obstetric specialists in secondary and tertiary referral centres. A range of skills and procedures will be demonstrated including use of forceps, breech delivery, twins and PPH. Hands on tuition will be a focus for a major part of the day.

Each attendee will be given pre-reading material of contemporary literature as soon as they register to prepare them for the workshop.
At the conclusion of the workshop the attendees will be asked to identify the most relevant practical session and presentation from the workshop and explain how each will impact on their practice.
Recognise and implement strategies for the prevention and treatment of post partum haemorrhage.
Develop proficiency in operative vaginal birth using forceps.
Develop proficiency in selected vaginal breech delivery.
Develop proficiency in vaginal delivery of selected twins.
Develop proficiency in dealing with complications of attempted assisted vaginal birth.
Demonstrate proficiency in the range of birthing procedures covered.
Participants will have 30 minutes in the hands on session and similarly at the conclusion of the workshop for review, reflection and verbal feedback in addition to completing the Workshop feedback questionnaire.
At the conclusion of the workshop they will be asked to identify the most relevant practical session and presentation from the workshop and explain how each will impact on their practice.
