Overview

This module is designed to provide an overview of the recommendations for the classification and treatment of pressure injuries from the Prevention and Treatment of Pressure Injuries: Clinical practice guideline. The International Guideline (2019). 

It is focused on the aged population and is most relevant for personal care workers and assistant nurses who are working in the residential aged care setting.

Some information provided here is designed to broaden your general knowledge base of how pressure injuries are classified and treated. Classification, dressing selection and dressings are usually attended by registered nurses (and in some cases, enrolled nurses). 

The information in this module is for the purpose of providing continuing professional development. All participants should refer to local protocols for your scope of practice.‍

Learning Objective

At the end of this module participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the important points for diagnosis of pressure injuries
  • Outline the different stages for classification of pressure injuries
  • Identify the steps required for ongoing assessment and monitoring of healing for pressure injuries in the residential aged care setting
  • Explain how effective assessment and management of pressure injury-related pain may be attended in the residential aged care setting
  • Discuss how effective wound care management of pressure injuries may be attended in the residential aged care setting
