Principles of Infection Control

This unit of study provides a comprehensive overview of the importance of infection prevention and control within the healthcare setting. Students examine issues related to legislation, quality, prevention, transmission and management of infections. Students will explore some of the specific challenges encountered when planning strategies to minimise potential transmission between persons receiving care, staff and all personnel involved in the health care system. The unit of study also examines infection prevention and control principles at both local and organisational levels, focusing on achieving positive quality health outcomes.
This unit of study meets Australian Government Department of Health education requirements for Infection Prevention and Control Leads, namely it:
- has a focus on infection prevention and control
- is delivered at AQF Level 8
- is delivered by a recognised education or training provider; and
- has assessments that facilitate successful completion of the course.

Analyse the standards and policies that inform infection prevention and control initiatives in Australian healthcare
Theme 3: Epidemiology and surveillance
Evaluate strategies employed to identify and control institutional and community-based infection outbreak
Theme 4: Professional & ethical issues
Investigate environmental considerations related to infection prevention and control in the context of their practice
Theme 5: Environmental considerations
Justify appropriate strategies for the prevention and control of infection
