As a Rural GP, you are managing emergency medical care in your local Hospital emergency departments. Rural Emergency Skills Program (RESP) Critical Care is our traditional RESP course, designed to support you to maintain and enhance the skills you need to deliver medical care in these demanding situations.

RESP has been at the forefront of emergency medicine training in SA for more than a decade, providing contextualised and relevant emergency education to rural GPs.

About the Course

This two-day, practical education program will further your emergency skills with a simulation-based approach to learning.

RESP Critical Care focuses on the treatment of critically ill or injured patients within an emergency context. Essential components of this course include patient assessment, immediate management of life threats to the airway, breathing or circulation, patient diagnosis, and the development of various emergency skills.

Eligibility

You can apply for a position at a RESP Critical Care if you live and practise as a GP in rural South Australia and actively participate in your local hospital’s after-hours accident and emergency roster.

Important Information

To consolidate your learning experience a comprehensive online learning component is sent to you to complete prior to the two-day workshop. These online modules must be completed before attending the workshop.

RESP Critical Care Program places are funded by RDWA for eligible participants.

If you are offered and accept a fully funded position, you will be agreeing to meet the terms and conditions which includes, agreeing to pay for the cost of a position if you do not complete all requirements. 

The Program is delivered by Learn EM.

Learning Outcomes

At the completion of the Program you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate the procedure for assessment of the critically ill or injured patient
  • Demonstrate the competency in procedural skills required for the immediate management of life threats to the airway, breathing or circulation
  • Demonstrate critical thinking in relation to the diagnosis and management of the critically ill or injured patient
  • Display increased confidence in dealing with emergency presentations
  • Identify approaches to maintaining and developing skills in emergency care
  • Improve understanding of the role of the team in the delivery of acute medical care
  • Identify the criteria for immediate referral of patient in critical condition to specialist services or retrieval from MedSTAR/RFDS.
Accreditation

RESP Critical Care is accredited for 40 Cat 1 RACGP points for both the online and practical workshops and 30 PRPD + 30 points MOPS with ACCRM.

The workshop meets the criteria for the Rural Procedural Grant.

If you have previously attended a RESP workshop you may be interested in attending RESP Paediatrics as an alternative option for your credentialing renewal application.
