Troubleshooting difficult asthma in adults: Module 1

Asthma care in Australia is primarily managed by GPs. This module aims to support GPs in this role by providing information about asthma control in adults with a particular focus on those patients who are finding it difficult to control their symptoms. This may be due to the nature of the asthma itself, patient co-morbidities, the choice of medication and delivery system, or difficulties with adherence to treatment.

By completing this learning activity, you will be able to:

  • Summarise the features of good and poor asthma control.
  • Assess patient’s recent asthma symptom control using a validated test.
  • Describe the step-up and step-down approach to asthma treatment
  • Identify the various types of medicine and delivery systems for asthma.
  • Evaluate adherence to these treatments and to asthma plans
