The Course in Tympanometry aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills to perform tympanometry point of care testing to provide a more detailed assessment of middle ear health (especially in children).

To confirm support history and otoscopy examination based on detailed knowledge of the anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology of the auditory system.

Vocational outcomes include enhanced clinical practice, addition of skills to scope of practice, ear health clinician.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon the successful completion of the course, students should have the skills and knowledge to enable them to:

  • Perform a tympanometric screening
  • Understand the results
  • Recognise abnormalities
  • Recognise the need to refer to medical staff or specialist
  • Give the patient a comprehensive explanation of the examination findings
  • Document the examination findings and outcome in the patient’s history.

Entry Requirements / Prerequisites
Entrants to the Course in Tympanometry must provide evidence of a relevant professional role. Relevant roles would include:
* Registered and Enrolled Nurses
* Allied Health Professionals, e.g. Audiologists
* Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Practitioners
* General practitioners.
Entrants should have:
* A minimum of six months’ employment or experience working with clients in a clinical environment
* High language, literacy and numeracy levels – sufficient to interpret medical documents/referrals/requests and write medical notes and reports.

Health Professional students must hold EHHPEH002 Promote, educate and manage ear health from the Foundations of Ear Health Program.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioners and Workers must hold EHHPEH002 Promote, educate and manage ear health from the Foundations of Ear Health Program and EHHAEH001 Assess ear health from the Otitis Media Care Pathways Program.
