Have you heard of health economics but don’t really know what it is? Maybe you’ve heard people talking about cost effectiveness but aren’t sure what it means, or you’re not clear what the newspaper articles about the health budget mean for you. Or perhaps you’re just sick of trying to explain to your hospital executive why you need more funding?!

Health economics is an increasingly important part of the health care system. This interactive webinar is designed to give you an overview of how economists think, and what it means when they apply this thinking to healthcare. Many people imagine health economics is all about cutting costs, but we’ll explore why this isn’t true. We’ll consider some of the broader question’s health economists try to answer, and how they might be relevant to, or impact on, OT practice. Finally, we will discuss why OTs should know and care about health economics, and how you can use this knowledge to advocate for OT.

SUITABLE FOR

OTs in any career stage

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • To understand four key concepts of (health) economics:
  • Resource scarcity

  • Value
  • To be aware of the breadth of areas health economists work on, particularly those that are relevant to occupational therapy
  • To be able to articulate the value of occupational therapy
