90516 - Advanced Remote Emergency Care Course (AREC)
The 3.5 day AREC program requires completion of online content which will provide the GP with an opportunity to undertake a program that will assist in the management of the acutely ill or deteriorating patient in a remote setting. This will occur through the application of sound principles, comprehensive and systematic assessment and the application and understanding of complex physiological alterations. This course extends the competencies of experienced rural and remote health practitioners to an expert level beyond that of the REC course. The AREC course focuses on troubleshooting and team leadership in emergency situations.
Relevance to General PracticeGeneral Practitioners often find themselves in the position of having to deliver emergency care to a patient. Evidence suggests “most GPs manage life threatening emergencies infrequently, managing them well requires adequate staff training, a well stocked and checked emergency trolley and streamlined protocols.” (O’Connor, 2012)“.
The latest ARC guidelines on basic and advanced life support emphasise the importance of early recognition of deterioration before cardiac arrest.” (Grantham and Narendranathan, 2012).
