About Nanango, 
In the 2016 Census, there were 50,313 people in Nanango. Of these, 50.4% were male and 49.1% were female. Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people made up 3.8% of the population. Nanango is a rural town in the South Burnett Region. It is only 1.75 hrs from Toowoomba City, which is a large rural city 2.5 hrs from Brisbane CBD. Nanango provides multiple services for patients and travel services for those with no car access.
 
 
Position Description: 
The General Practitioner’s main role at the medical centre is to provide comprehensive medical care to individuals, families and communities. The General Practitioner in this position is required to manage various types of illnesses that present in an undifferentiated way at an early stage of development, which may sometimes require urgent intervention. The holistic approach of general practice aims to take into consideration the biological, psychological and social factors relevant to the care of each patient's illness. The General Practitioner’s duties are not confined to specific organs of the body; however, they also have particular skills in treating people with multiple health issues. They must be able to treat patients of any age and sex to levels of complexity that vary.
 
The General Practitioner may be at times involved in emergency care and sometimes will need to perform low complexity surgical procedures. Follow up of our patients are encouraged on simple and complex health conditions. The General Practitioner will provide a range of health services ranging from prevention of illness through to treatment and rehabilitation. The position requires at times consultation with other professionals internally who have additional special skills in some areas of medicine and externally as required, with coordination and ongoing care relating back to the General Practitioner.
 
The General Practitioner in this role will continue to assist patients and the community by providing ongoing education, participation in health promotion, conducting research and assisting training to colleagues and other health professionals.

Clinical Requirements:
Clinical competencies and specific tasks include the following but are not limited to this list.

Medical – diagnosis and treatment of:

  • Diabetes Mellitus and other endocrine and metabolic diseases
  • Respiratory diseases e.g. asthma
  • Digestive diseases e.g. Gastroenteritis
  • Epilepsy
  • Heart diseases
  • Chronic ulcers
  • Diseases of the eye
  • Diseases of the ear, nose and throat
  • Skin lesions e.g. solar keratosis, basal cell carcinoma
  • Cancer
  • Dermatitis
  • Circulatory problems e.g. relating to ischemic heart disease
  • Heart disease
  • Blood disorders
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Sexually transmitted disease diagnosis
  • Musculoskeletal problem diagnosis
  • Neurological problem diagnosis
  • Follow up patients recently discharged from hospital and referred to hospital and specialist e.g. dermatologist

Ability to perform tasks such as:

  • Vaccination including children and travel
  • ECG (interpretation and emergency)
  • Pulmonary function test
  • Liaise with community supports e.g. community nursing for elderly
  • Wound care, splints and plasters
  • Blood and urine test
  • Medication prescription
  • Major medical assessment
  • Breast examination
  • Testicular examination
  • Eye and ear examinations e.g. for FB in eye and ear syringing
  • Sexually transmitted disease checks
  • Counselling advice

Surgical:

  • Suturing lacerations
  • Excision of abscess
  • Excision of skin lesions e.g. BCC and SCC
  • Cryotherapy
  • Removal of cysts
  • Removal of ingrown toenail

Obstetrics and Gynaecology:

  • Prenatal care
  • Postnatal care
  • Undertaking pap smears
  • Family planning e.g. counselling for termination of pregnancy

Emergency:

  • Management of acute medical/ surgical emergencies e.g. Myocardial infarction, hypoglycaemia
  • Basic or advance life support

Mental Health:

  • Treatment of depression, anxiety etc
  • Drug and alcohol abuse diagnosis treatment, referral

After Hours: No
 
 
Qualifications and Experience: 

  • Basic Medical Qualification
  • Non VR or VR
  • Valid AHPRA Registration
