Position Description – Registered  Nurse

Position Title:           PRACTICE NURSE

 

 

Reports To:      Health Practice Manager

 

Purpose

To work alongside the GP to assist with triage, vaccines\immunisation and the forming and follow up on health care plans, plus, perform clinical and community health promotion activities at the Murray Valley Aboriginal Health Service as a means of improving the health and well-being of the local Aboriginal community.

Position Description

The role of Registered Nurse at the Murray Valley Aboriginal Health Service is to carry out clinical procedures with the GP and assist the local Aboriginal community to increase its level of awareness and knowledge in relation to health care matters. Work with trainee nursed and staff

Responsibilities

  • CLINICAL: Perform clinical duties within required level of clinical competency, according to best available evidence.  Explain procedures to clients, providing them with support and reassurance.  Duties include triage, immunisations and other injections; wound management, chronic disease management, ECG’s and collection of pathology samples.  Assist doctors with clinical procedures and prepare health care plans.  Maintain clinical documentation and enter data in Communicare.
  • CLIENT SERVICES:  Assist with triage, data management, diagnostic services, networking with other providers, planning & management of client care and client advocacy.  Telephone clients with test results as directed by medical staff. 
  • IMPROVEMENT OF CLIENT HEALTH OUTCOMES:  Conduct preventative/screening procedures; assist with client education and community health promotion activities.  Co-ordinate client recall and outreach programs and GP management plans and team care arrangement. 
  • EQUIPMENT & SUPPLIES:  Ensure sterilisation and maintenance of clinical equipment.  Maintain stocks of clinical supplies, including correct storage (such as refrigeration), removal of out-of-date stock and ordering supplies.  Provide input in purchasing relevant clinical equipment and supplies.
  • COMPLIANCE: Work with MVAC health manager to maintain awareness of current and new legislation to ensure business is complying with all statutory and regulatory obligations including infection control, sterilisation, hazardous materials & safe handling/disposal of medical waste, records management, OHS, and accreditation.  Ensure relevant personnel are kept informed and changes are made to systems and procedures as required. 
  • PROFESSIONAL:  Act within the Health Service and nursing code of ethics & appropriate level of clinical competence at all times.  Maintain awareness of current evidence and research on clinical practices and inform/educate other Health Service staff. Change systems and procedures to ensure compliance with best available evidence as applicable. 
  • OHS: Consistently be aware of OHS requirements and comply with them.
  • GENERAL: Work as part of a team to implement all parts of the SDRF Action Plan.

Delegation of tasks to other medical and non medical staff as required.  Provide direct and indirect supervision to Aboriginal Health Workers in regard to clinical services.  Assist with other Health Service duties as required.  Tasks on this position description may be adjusted at times to best utilise staff abilities in various areas.

Education, Qualifications and Experience

ESSENTIAL: 

  • Appropriate General Nursing qualification & registration with AHPRA
  • Minimum of one years nursing experience, preferably in a community-based role.
  • An ability to communicate effectively with Aboriginal people and to handle cultural and health issues in a sensitive manner.
  • Extensive and varied nursing experience and an understanding of Aboriginal health issues and trends.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the needs of general practice and interest in community-based nursing including client education and health promotion.
  • Knowledge of current immunisation schedules, Diabetes management, asthma management, enhanced primary care items, infection control, CPR and emergency resuscitation techniques, equipment & drugs.
  • A demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and effectively as part of a small team.  Good organisational and planning skills as well as the ability to produce meaningful reports and analyse relevant data.
  • Reasonable level of computer skills for reporting and data entry.
  • Maintain relevant First Aid Certificate.
  • Possession of current driver’s licence

DESIRABLE: 

  • Competence in the use of relevant equipment & software
  • Additional qualifications such as Accredited Women’s Health Certificate, Diabetes Education Certificate, Asthma/Spirometry qualification/education, cervical and breast screening.
  • Training or experience in Medicare item numbers & health funds.
  • Member of APNA / ANF
  • Post graduate qualifications, midwifery qualification and/or immunisation certificate an advantage.

 

Performance Standards

 

  • Achieving the targets and measures set out annually in the IAHP Action Plan, by carrying out the strategies in co-operation with the Health Service team.
  • Satisfactorily carry out all relevant responsibilities of the role as Community Health Nurse, in keeping with the policies and procedures of the Murray Valley Aboriginal Health Service.

Conditions of Employment

Permanent  position: 34 hours per week

 

Hours Of Work

Monday – Thursday : 9:00am – 5:00pm

Friday : 9:00am – 4:00pm

Closed Weekends and Public Holidays.  

However it is expected that our staff will work extra time on occasions if this is required to deliver essential client care.

Breaks:  1 hour for lunch and 10 minutes each for morning and afternoon tea to be taken in shifts with other staff to ensure continuity of care.

  • Permanent position with a probationary period of 6 months.
  • A current Working With Children Check is required
  • Professional development is encouraged and may be required.  (Professional development may be paid or unpaid.)
  • Potential for contact with hazardous material such as blood & body fluids.
